Community Involvement

Affinity Private proudly engages regularly in community welfare programs. We believe in staying abreast of social issues and areas in the community that could do with a helping hand, learning more about their plights and exploring how we can assist in both the financial and physical aspects.

Every year, two million Australians will experience hunger. But, over the same period, we’ll also waste 200kg of food for every man, woman and child in the nation. This doesn’t make any sense. Melbourne food charity FareShare is doing something about it by rescuing surplus, quality food from supermarkets, farmers and other businesses.

With the help of 800 regular volunteers, FareShare cooks this food into 25,000 free nutritious meals a week for Victorian charities – such as soup vans, homeless shelters, food banks and school breakfast programs. We do this in Australia’s largest charity kitchen, based in Abbotsford.

By ‘rescuing’ food, we mean that it would otherwise be wasted, ending up in landfill. And in saving food from landfill, we also do our bit for the planet by helping to cut methane pollution and reducing demand for new food products.

We are a not-for-profit community organisation operating on a modest budget – thanks to the generosity of philanthropic foundations, businesses and private donors. Every $75 FareShare receives from fundraising allows us to cook and distribute 100 nutritious meals.

Very Special Kids

Very Special Kids cares for children with life-threatening conditions by providing a children’s hospice and professional family support services.

We are a children’s charity that helps more than 900 families across Victoria who have a child with a life-threatening condition with ongoing support from diagnosis all the way through to recovery or bereavement. Sadly, many of the children we care for will not reach adulthood.

The free-of-charge family support services include counselling, advocacy, sibling support, bereavement support, networking and peer activities, trained family volunteers and specialist care at the Very Special Kids Hospice. Each family is supported in unique and varying ways according to their personal needs.

Our Very Special Kids Hospice is the only children’s hospice in Victoria where we offer families access to planned and emergency respite, as well as end-of-life care. The hospice provides 24-hour specialist nursing care in a warm and welcoming environment.

It costs more than $7 million each year to operate Very Special Kids and we rely substantially on generous fundraising support from corporates and the community to provide our services free-ofcharge to families.

Very Special Kids was established in 1985 and we now have more than 90 staff and 480 volunteers to support these children and families through the hardest time of their lives.
